St Athan Veterans Celebrate clubs 50th anniversary
St Athan Golf Club Veterans Section held an Open Day competition to celebrate the club's 50th anniversary.
The pairs competition was open to golfers of age 55 and over who are members of St Athan Golf Club Veterans Section. Invitations were also sent out to senior section organisers of other local golf clubs that play annual matches with St Athan Golf Club. Also seniors from 11 joined St Athan golfers to play a fun round of golf.
St Athan Veterans captain Mike Cronin and his committee hosted 108 on the day, and the competition was played in good spirits with friendly banter between friends. The sun was out and the wind was blustery and string, but it did not hamper the pairs teams from playing some excellent golf with some very good scoring. There was even a hole-in-one!
The eventual winners were David Brander and Chris Goodfellow from St Athan Golf Club, scoring 40 Stableford points, narrowly beating Martin Richards and Derek Dowling from Caerphilly Golf Club (39) and Arthur Renton and Jeff Rosser from Pontypridd Golf Club who also scored 39 points to finish third.
A very good day was had by all, and Mike Cronin would dearly like to thank the club's veteran section members and all our golfing friends and competitors who travelled from far and wide, and the support personnel that helped the celebratory event on the day, with a special thanks to Peter Daniel who was the first tee starter for almost the entire competition. His gratitude and thanks also go to the greenkeepers who presented the golf course in wonderful condition and to the bar and kitchen staff who kept everyone fed and watered throughout the day.
